SAFE - Services for Adolescent and Family Enrichment

This program was developed to help young people resist pressures to become sexually involved at an early age. The program is designed for young teens, ages 9 - 14, to help prepare them beforehand for the pressures they will inevitably experience as they grow older.

Our aim is to present information regarding the general nature of relationships, societal pressures influencing teens' attitudes about sex, and assertive responses teens can use in peer pressure situations. The skills teens learn through the Postponing Sexual Involvement series should help them delay sexual activity until they are prepared to make decisions which have a long range impact on their lives. Parents participating in the program receive information so they can help reinforce their teen's decision to say "No".
This program is taught in middle schools and high schools through a series of topics.

    PROGRAM GOALS::

Help young teens understand the pressures in our society which influence young people's attitudes about sex.

Help young teens understand their rights in social relationships

Help young teens deal with pressure situations through the use of assertive responses.

Help young teens say "No" to teenage sex.

Help parents understand the pressures in our society which influence young people's attitudes about sex.

Give parents tools to help young teens say "No" to teenage sex.

THIS EDUCATIONAL SERIES INCLUDES:

Session I
Social Pressure

This session helps participants understand the various needs some teens attempt to meet through sexual involvement. It includes information on how those needs could be better met in other ways. Teens learn that popular media often distorts the meaning of sex and intimate relationships.

Session II      Peer Pressure

This session helps teens understand peer pressure in group situations and on a one-to-one basis. Participants learn that it is their absolute right to say "No".

Session III and IV     Problem Solving and Using New Skills

These sessions help teens look at ways to limit inappropriate expressions of physical affection. Participants practice saying "No" to peer pressures, with special emphasis on feeling good about themselves afterward. As part of this final session, each participant is coached through a successful experience using the "saying no" techniques in a simulated pressure situation.
