Healthy Moms Happy Babies (HMHB)
204 East Church Street
Adrian, Michigan 49221
(517) 263-2375

HMHB is a pre-natal and post-natal support program that pairs participants with para-professional advocates. The program is designed to facilitate early and continued pre-natal and post-natal care for clients, and provide needed transportation for medical and other related pregnancy care. Women are provided transportation to weekly nutritious luncheons in a supportive environment. Programs are presented each week on many related topics............

pre-natal health care
post-natal heathe care
infant health care
job opportunities
stress management
budgeting
nutrition
immunizations
parenting
area resources

Clients receive coupons for attending necessary appointments regarding the physical and mental health of themselves and their children. They redeem these coupons for infant necessities at a quarterly distribution.

WHO IS SERVED?
Clients of any age who are pregnant or recently delivered are referred to us from the Health Department, Community Action Agency, physicians, county school counselors, other clients, or self-referral.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR REFERRAL
Participants have been identified as being at risk of having a low birth weight infant and may have one or more risk factors:

FUNDING SOURCES FOR HMHB
Our major sources of funding are the Michigan Department of Community Health Children's Trust Fund 0-3 Prevention and the Family Independence Agency. The United Way of Lenawee has also supplemented our budget generously on a regular basis. Our program is enhanced by generous donations from many groups and individuals in our community. With the help of volunteers, church groups, community agencies, and service groups our weekly luncheons and quarterly distributions are increasingly successful.

THE HEALTH OF OUR CHILDREN IS THE FUTURE OF OUR NATION
Despite the fact that the United States offers the best health care in the world, each year approximately 40,000 infants die before reaching their first birthday. Michigan has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the U.S.
Low birth weight (5 lbs. 5 oz. and less) is the leading cause of death among babies in the U.S.  Many of these deaths can be prevented with proper pre-natal care...

Award winning programs like Healthy Moms Happy Babies are Michigan's attempt to improve this situation.
