In 1959 members of the Lenawee County Ministerial Association and
Associated charities collaborated with other civic-minded individuals on the need for a
counseling service. A local board of directors was formed, and by January of 1960, Family
Counseling Services was formally incorporated as a non-profit, non-sectarian organization. On July 5, 1961 the agency opened its doors to the public, providing child
and family services to residents of Lenawee County. Since that date, services have been
expanded and an ever increasing number of clients are served by the agency. Family
Counseling and Children's Services became a United Way agency the following year. In 1968
the agency joined Child and Family Services of Michigan, Inc.
